Defensor Sporting vs Olimpia
Estadio Luis Franzini
(0-0) 0-0
Olimpia’s third straight goalless draw at away matches in continental competition was a dull as they come yet it will suit the Paraguayan side who just need to win at home to get into the group stages. Ivan Almeida set up fairly defensively, leaving out playmaker Juan Manuel Salgueiro and opting for the pace of Blas Cáceres and Jorge Báez. All in all he will be pleased that they didn’t concede, Defensor Sporting had a header just over the bar in the first half and I can’t remember Martin Silva being called into action.
In a match with so little action the highlight was probably the appearance of a toad on the pitch following a torrential downpour that started just before the break. Let’s hope there is more to write about next week, the return leg is in Para Uno on 31 January.
Olimpia XI: Martín Silva; Salustiano Candia, Herminio Miranda, Enrique Meza; Jorge Báez, Blas Cáceres, Carlos Humberto Paredes, Richard Ortiz, Sebastián Ariosa; Arnaldo Castorino, Fredy Bareiro
Subs: Eduardo Aranda for Carlso Humberto Paredes, Juan Manuel Salgueiro for Arnaldo Castorino, Enzo Prono for Fredy Bareiro
