Paraguay Abroad: José Ortigoza scores in China, Chelo & Piris make debuts in Italy

A total of 5 goals from our compatriots on foreign soil this weekend, we have goals from China, Colombia, Ecuador and as ever Mexico to show you below.

CHINA

Lucas Barrios (Guangzhou Evergrande) desperately wants out of the Far East but there are no such problems for José Ortigoza who scored what looked to be the winner against Didier Drogba’s Shanghai Shenhua only for Nicolas Anelka to grab a last minute equaliser in a thrilling 3-3 draw. You can watch a shaven-headed Ortigoza’s well timed run and cool finish below (aprox 3 mins 30 secs)

MEXICO

No goals for the defenders this week but Pablo Aguilar (Tijuana), Herminio Miranda (Puebla) and Paulo da Silva (Pachuca) all kept cleansheets. Edgar Benítez was used off the bench in Toluca’s draw while Dario Verón saw his Pumas side suffer another defeat. That leaves the hero of the weekend, Osvaldo Martinez (Atlante) who scored a delightful lob, the only goal of the game, versus Atlas.

COLOMBIA

For once we are not talking about a Robin Ramirez goal, his Tolima side (that included Antony Silva and Manuel Maciel) were beaten 3-1 at home by Atletico Nacional. Instead the plaudits go to Marco Lazaga who grabbed a headed equaliser for Patriotas against Pasto.

ECUADOR

Eduardo Echverría continues his amazing rise from futsal player to Carapeguá’s topscorer and now is playing for one of the continent’s biggest clubs, Liga de Quito. On Saturday he scored the winner 10 minutes from time with a stunning shot, Aldo Vera was tresent for the opponents, LDU Loja.

In other games, Domingo Martinez (Macará) was on the winning side as were Librado Azcona and Edgar Balbuena (Independiente) but Miguel Paniagua (Deportivo Cuenca) crashed to defeat against Barcelona.

ITALY

Ivan Piris (Roma) made his debut in a 2-2 draw with Catania while Marcelo Estigarribia (Sampdoria) also played his first competitive game in an excellent victory in the San Siro versus AC Milan.

SPAIN

Nelson Haedo (Valencia) was consigned to the bench and didn’t come on in his team’s 3-3 draw.

ENGLAND

Antolín Alcaraz (Wigan Athletic) was involved in his side’s 2-0 win away to Southampton.

International Friendly: Guatemala vs Paraguay preview

Guatemala vs Paraguay
Robert F.Kennedy Memorial Stadium
15/08/2012, 18.15 hs (23.15 hs BST)

For the third time this year Paraguay and Guatemala go head-to-head in an international friendly, the first game in Luque was won 2-1 by the albirroja with the ’2nd leg’ in the Guatemala City also a victory for the South Americans. Now they meet on neutral ground, in Washington DC, in a game that represents Gerardo Pelusso’s first chance to look at his players.

The first game in Luque finished 2-1 to Paraguay

At Olimpia the Uruguayan coach usually lined his team up in a 4-4-2 or a 4-3-3 formation but with the national team recently there has been a problem scoring goals, Martino managed an average of 1.1 goals per game and while Chiqui Arce increased that return to 1.4 in his 12 official games it was heavily reliant on goals from set pieces and penalties. With that in mind Pelusso has looked to the recently-nationalized Jonathan Fabbro who will make his international debut aged 30. While some readers may be more aware of his girlfriend (strongly advise male readers to click this link)  the Argentinian native who has taken Paraguayan nationality having lived here for five years is a class act. He isn’t a traditional South American playmaker, he’s too tall (1.88 metres) and strong and has more defensive ability than a typical ’10′, but he can’t be considered a striker either as he rarely finds himself in the penalty area. Undoubtedly his great strengths are shots from distance and vicious free kicks but he needs to get the best out the striker he plays with, most likely to be Oscar Cardozo with Lucas Barrios (injury) and Nelson Haedo (given leave to sign for Valencia) unavailable.

In the previous two meetings with Guatemala it is clear that Paraguayan coach Ever Almeida are well organised and comfortable in possession but lack any killer punch. The conduit is Marco Pappa in midfield who plays in the United States and scored a late equaliser against USMNT in their previous competitive game. La Albirroja have successfully neutralised his threat the past two games and it is likely they’ll be able to do so again and win this game to nil.

Pelusso points the way in training – Photo: Prensa Selección Asociación Paraguaya de Fútbol

PREDICTION: Paraguay are too good on paper and will want to impress their new coach, 0-2

SELECTED ODDS: Guatemala win 7.4, Draw 5.2, Paraguay win 1.39, Under 2.5 goals 2.08, 0-2 scoreline 6.8

BEST BET: Not much value in the win, one possibility is ‘Paraguay win to nil’ or maybe spread the final score market with 0-1, 0-2 and 0-3 all possibilities

Paraguay XI probable (4-2-3-1)

Justo Villar; Dario Verón, Antolin Alcaraz, Paulo Da Silva, Richard Ortiz; Víctor Cáceres, Cristian Riveros; Hernan Perez, Jonathan Fabbro, Marcelo Estigarribia; Oscar Cardozo

Paraguay Abroad: Luis Caballero on target and Pablo Aguilar scores again

Another weekend, another goal for Pablo Aguilar, the Tijuana defender has now notched up three in four league games and is joint 2nd topscorer in the Mexican Primera División. Over in China, Lucas Barrios was left out of the side with sunstroke while in Russia Luis Caballero continues his hot streak with another goal for Krylya as they sit in sixth place. There are also goals from Ecuador and Cyprus in another decent week for our Paraguayan legion.

RUSSIA

Luis Caballero bundled in the first goal to set Krylya on their way against Rostov.Pablo Zeballos set up the winner last week and once again was the provider from a corner as the side from Samara ran out 2-1 victors to record back-to-back wins.

CHINA

Lucas Barrios suffered heatstroke on Wednesday so wasn’t included by Lippi in the Guangzhou team at the weekend, José Ortigoza’s Shandong ran out 4-0 winners but the Paraguayan didn’t find the net.

MEXICO

Another incredible weekend for Pablo Aguilar who is turning into a prolific goalscorer, the central defender opened the scoring for Tijuana in a 2-2 draw with Paulo Da Silva’s Pachuca.

There was another all-Paraguayan battle as Edgar Benítez (Toluca) got the better of Dario Verón (Pumas) in a 2-1 away win and on Friday night Osvaldo Martinez (Atlante) also won 2-1 as part of the visiting side, overcoming Jaguares. Herminio Miranda (Puebla) played the full 90 minutes as his side went down to 10-men and lost 1-0 to Cruz Azul.

BRAZIL

Víctor ‘Topo’ Cáceres made a long awaited debut as Flamengo moved up to ninth with a 2-0 win, elsewhere Figueirense ended a 15-game winless streak but neither Wilson Pittoni nor Mario Saldivar were in the match squad.

CYPRUS

Aldo Adorno scored a good goal to seal APOEL’s passage to the next phase of the Europa League

ARGENTINA

Ricardo Mazacotte (Unión de Santa Fe) still hasn’t tasted victory at his new club, it was also defeat for Justo Villar (Estudiantes) and Víctor Ayala (Lanús). However the latter’s defeat came at the hands of Newell’s Old Boys the only goal being set up by Marcos Cáceres’ low centre.

ECUADOR

A goal for Domingo Martinez (Macará) sealed a 3-0 away win against Independiente with Librado Azcona and Edgar Balbuena on the home team.

Also in the Andean country, Fernando Gimenez (Emelec) was involved in the clásico defeat to Barcelona before travelling to Washington DC for the Paraguay friendly.

ITALY

We don’t usually drop down a division but this was a special case as teenage prospect Rodrigo Alborno made his senior debut for Novara in the Coppa Italia on his 19th Birthday, the former Inter Milan left back’s side won 4-3.

Paraguay Abroad: Goals galore around the globe

A good weekend for our ambassador’s around the world as several Paraguayans found the net, here is just a brief round-up of the major figures with video evidence of their labour.

EUROPE

RUSSIA

Luis Caballero (Krylya) and Pablo Zeballos (Krylya) made their official debuts for the Samara-based club against Terek Grozny, while Zeballos was subbed off his compatriot played the full 90 minutes and grabbed the equaliser with a cool penalty kick.

PORTUGAL

Juan Manuel Iturbe (Porto) got some rare minutes on the pitch in a friendly and scored this wonder-goal in his side’s 3-0 victory.

Oscar Cardozo (Benfica) has been linked with a move away from Benfica but he turned out for the Lisbon side in a friendly against Slask and scored a typical ‘Tacuara’ goal.

CENTRAL AMERICA

MEXICO

Pablo Aguilar (Xolos de Tijuana) was another player who scored on his debut, the ex-Luque defender grabbed the second goal of the game in a victory over Puebla, with Herminio Miranda representing the away team.

SOUTH AMERICA

CHILE

Miguel Angel Cuellar (Cobresal) scored the equaliser against Colo Colo as his side bounced back to win in Santiago. You can see his goal after 1:45 mins on the video.

ASIA

CHINA

Lucas Barrios (Guanzhou Evegrande) grabbed the winner for his new side in the Chinese Premier League with a good header.

Paraguay Abroad: Its raining goals in América & Barrios is Bundesliga bicampeón

The major news is that Borussia Dortmund were crowned Bundesliga champions for the second year running which means another title for Paraguay’s Lucas Barrios. Admittedly it hasn’t been a vintage season for the striker, according to ABC he has made just two starts this season featuring in only 327 minutes of football and scoring a solitary goal, but it is another winner’s medal for the CV as the striker looks to move on in the (European) summer.

Back on these shores and there were goals in Colombia, Chile, Bolivia, Ecuador and Venezuela from eight Paraguayans making it nine worldwide (Cristian Riveros netted a penalty in Turkey). You can see a handy compilation video here. As ever the full details are below.

Paraguay Abroad: Guaraní reign on other side of Chaco in Bolivia

With only Hernan Perez scoring in Europe (now has two in two for the yellow submarine) the major talking point was just north of the border in Bolivia where three of our pioneers got on the scoresheet. There was also a first league goal for ex-Rubio Ñu striker Digno Gonzalez and a goal in Chile for Rodrigo Rojas who is putting his Belgian nightmare behind him. In Argentina there were two scorers, Nestor Bareiro got an equaliser for Olimpo who went on to lose while Victor Aquino needed just five minutes as a sub to etch his name in the scorers books as Newell’s Old Boys (managed by ex-Paraguay coach Gerardo Martino) went joint top of the league. Full round up and all the goals below.

Paraguay Abroad: Dario Lezcano back amongst the goals in Switzerland

There were ten albirroja goalscorers outside of Paraguay’s frontiers this weekend inlcuding Robin Ramirez in Colombia, Aureliano Torres in Mexico just some of those who found the net in Latin America, while across the Atlantic there were strikes by Roque Santa Cruz and Nelson Haedo Valdez in Europe, and also Dario Lezcano for Luzern in Switzerland who we focus on this week.

Player Stats

Name: Dario Lezcano

D.o.B: 30 June 1990

Club: FC Luzern, Switzerland

Hometown: Asunción, Paraguay

Height: 1.78 metres

Position: Striker

Previous Clubs: Sportivo Trinidense (Paraguay), FC Wil, FC Thun (both Switzerland)

Dario Lezcano hardly played in his native country before being whisked away to Europe aged 18 where he settled in St.Gallen and FC Wil. While not scoring he played regularly over the three years, improving as a player before getting a move to FC Thun at the beginning of 2011. There he enjoyed a successful year, scoring key goals like this equaliser against Palermo in the Europa League.

Dario Lezcano - Photo: Wikipedia.org

Earlier this year he moved on to another Swiss club, FC Luzern where he has started excellentely scoring a double in his second game against Young Boys, the second a real cracker. His equaliser against Basel this weekend has taken him to 4 goals in 8 games for his new club. A feature of his play is his strong running and power which allows to get him into the box where he is deadly with the ball at his feet. His current form can help Luzern qualify for European competition where once again Lezcano can show the continent his credentials.
