Weekend Wrap: Olimpia slip up but extend their lead to four

Tacuary vs Olimpia
Estadio Defensores del Chaco
(0-0) 0-0

Olimpia, with nine wins in their last 11 games against Tacuary, just couldn’t break down the stubborn resistance of the bottom club in a frustrating 90 minutes for the league leaders. El Decano lined up in the same 4-3-3 formation that beat Libertad in midweek with seemingly Russian-bound Luis Caballero and Pablo Zeballos up front alongside Maxi Biancucchi. For Tacuary they had Gregor Aguayo back from a six-month suspension although another four teammates had been left out for poor performance and possible indiscipline during the concentración.

Surprisingly it was Tacuary who had the first chance, after just two minutes their best outfield player Jorge Ortega forced a good save from Martin Silva when the ball fell to him in the box. The nominal home side were defeinding well, in the first 20 minutes Olimpia were restricted to long shots and their set piece delivery wasn’t troubling the Tacuary goal. In fact Tacuary should have gone ahead, veteran Raul Román stung Silva’s hands with a half volley on the edge of the area and the loose ball fell to Ortega in the box, his shot was pushed away by a wonderful reaction save by the big Uruguayan goalkeeper. Olimpia’s best chances in the first half came from Richard Ortiz’s head, firstly after 29 minutes a wonderful cross from Eduardo Aranda found the Paraguay international but Carlos Servín pulled off an excellent save to turn the ball away for a corner. On 43 minutes Servín made another incredible stop this time with just one hand as Eugenio Montiel’s cross had found Ortiz unmarked in the box.

Olimpia began the second half as they’d finished the first, Maxi Biancucchi flashing a shot wide after 54 minutes but in general they were struggling to keep the ball and lacked ideas in the final third. In general moves broke down on the edge of the Tacuary area but Biancucchi did finally worm his way into the box after 65 minutes before being felled by a robust tackle, replays suggest that it should have been a penalty. The introduction of Alberto Contrera seemed to work for Olimpia as the winger began getting balls into the penalty area, central defender Salustiano Candia could have profited from one such cross but his diving header was inches wide. In the final minutes there was another chance as a corner was allowed to bounce twice in the six yard box but Tacuary managed to avert danger with no Olimpia player able to make a telling connection. Roque Santa Cruz was in the crowd to watch his younger brother Julio make his debut, although the striker didn’t carve out an opportunity for himself. Fittingly the final chance of the game arrived at Richard Ortiz’s head on 92 minutes, once again he met a corner in terrific fashion but as the ball flew past Servín it also sailed over the bar.

Guarani vs Sol
Estadio Dos Bocas
(0-1) 2-1 – Iván Gonzalez Ferreira 50′, Elvis Marecos 74′; Enzo Prono 35′

Guaraní put in a tremendous second half shift to turn the game around against high-flying Sol de América and end their four game winning streak. It was a historic event at Dos Bocas as the game was taken charge by Japanese officials who have been ‘borrowed’ by the APF in their committment to try and improve the standard of refereeing.

The home side settled better with more possession and both strikers went close, Carlos Hidalgo’s free kick went just over after nine minutes and a couple of minutes later Dante López hit a scorching shot from 25 yards tipped over for a corner. Despite Guaraní’s ascendency Sol were always a threat on the break and especially down their left-hand side where José Ortigoza was peeling off into the space left by attacking full back Eduardo Filippini. Perfect evidence of this was the exchange of goal threats after 25 minutes, firstly Filippini combined down the right with Hidalgo who found López in the box. The number seven rounded Roberto Acosta but was unable to finish from a tight angle. The visitor’s broke immediately and a clever turn by Enzo Prono lost his marker on the right, he spread the ball across to Ortigoza unmarked on the left and with Filippini nowhere he was able to play a pass to the overlapping David Mendieta who dragged his shot just wide.

That was a warning for the aborigen and ten minutes later they were made to pay the price as the league’s topscorers and form side took the lead through Prono. Mendieta did well to lift a pass over the defence and the onrushing Sergio Escalante showed strength and balance to turn the ball into the near post under pressure from a Guaraní defender. Prono had made a fantastic darting run to that area leaving his marker for dead and he tapped the ball in to net his eighth of the season, a fantastic return for this intelligent youngster.

The second half was a different story, Guaraní continued to dominate possession but were far more incisive and had equalised after six minutes of intensive pressure. Nelson Romero had threaded a great pass into Iván Gonzalez Ferreira but a last ditch tackle forced the ball out for a corner kick. From the resulting set piece Gonzalez Ferreira got his reward, a half-clearance found him on the edge of the box and from a difficult angle he managed to turn and shoot, surprising Acosta with the force of the shot.

Elvis Marecos grabbed the winner – Photo: D10.com.py

The aurinegro kept pushing fora  winner, López stung Acosta’s hands with a fierce shot from distance, Marcelo Palau had a long shot saved too and forced a great stop from a header. So it was no great surprise when the Danzarín fell behind to Elvis Mareco’s thumping header from a corner with a quarter of an hour left. Sol had a late effort that nearly brought the equaliser, substitute Lorenzo Frutos saw his header tipped over by Aurrocochea. Ultimately Guaraní were good value for their win.

Guaraní XI: Pablo Aurrecochea, Eduardo Filippini, Luis Cabral, Elvis Marecos, Edgar Aranda, Nelson Romero, Marcelo Palau, Aguilar, Iván Gonzalez Ferreira, Dante Lopez, Carlos Hidalgo

Sol de América XI: Roberto Acosta; Roberto Bonet, Martínez, Bruno Valdez, Diego Ciz; Sergio Escalante, Angel Enciso, Edgar Orzusa, David Mendieta, José Ortigoza, Enzo Prono

Libertad vs Cerro Porteño
Estadio Defensores del Chaco
(1-0) 2-1 – Gustavo Mencia 5′, Rodolfo Gamarra 89′; Jonathan Fabbro 76′

Libertad dealt a huge blow to Cerro Porteño’s title hopes with a last minute winner from substitute Rodolfo Gamarra who notched up his third of the season. The victory also keeps Libertad in with a sniff of the title, although seven points behind with four games left to play means they need Olimpia to go into meltdown if they are to have a chance. For Cerro’s Julio Dos Santos it was a disappointing result on his 250th appearance for the club.

Gamarra’s ambush marketing – Photo: abc.com.py

Libertad struck early on just as they had during the week against Olimpia  with substitute goalkeeper Pablo Gavilán beaten to the ball by Gustavo Mencia as Cerro’s defence were statuesque not due to their own failings but the excellent delivery of Victor Ayala who is almost unplayable from set pieces in the final third. Gavilan was suspect again when he failed to claim several crosses, unsure of his positioning and the azulgrana defence had to fall back to try and clear their lines. One such mistake resulted in the ball falling to Ayala just outside the box, he rattled the crossbar with a stunning effort.

Cerro were by no means second best though, they looked to fashion chances and improved after 20 minutes when Fossati instructed them to play with four at the back instead of a back three and wing backs. Roberto Nanni is always a threat in the air and his header whistled wide of the post, the Argentine striker then tested the goalkeeper on 37 minutes with a clever shot on the turn. Jonathan Fabbro was looking motivated but was unable to find an inch of space as Jonathan Santana closed him in midfield or left him to the centre back Cristian Nasuti who pressured Fabbro when he picked up a position in between defence and midfield. There was no doubt that if he did find any room to work in then Libertad would be in trouble, about five minutes before the break Nasuti was out of position and Fabbro nearly punished the Guma, his long shot crashing off the woodwork. Luis Caceres couldn’t score with the follow up as Rodrigo Muñoz reacted well in goal.

In the second half the rain intensified in Sajonia but it didn’t ruin the spectacle as both sides had chances in a fantastic forty-five minutes of football. José Ariel Nuñez, who has concreted his place as Libertad’s best forward player, should have made it two-nil after 47 minutes, beating the offside trap only to see his side-footed shot saved by the outstretched leg of Gavilan. On the hour Fossati transformed his left-hand side, taking off the two Benitez’s (César and Edgar) replacing them with Mingo Salcedo and Juan Manuel Lucero both recovering from long-term injury. The emphasis now was on getting balls into the box, Nanni nearly equalised after 66 minutes when he challenged Muñoz and who dropped the ball under pressure but he couldn’t get the definitive touch. Cerro then escaped a penalty shout, Cáceres clearly blocked a cross with his arm but Libertad’s appeals were waved away.

Cerro suffer in the rain – Photo: D10.com.py

A controversial finish was on the cards when Jonathan Fabbro equalised, a simply wonderful freekick with the outside of his foot full of power and swerve that left Muñoz with no chance. 17-year-old Maurito Caballero, heavily linked with Inter Milan, was thrown on to try and find a winner and his header was well saved by Gavilan. Straight up the other end Santiago Salcedo could have secured three points for Cerro Porteño hitting the bar in a frantic finale. Then after 89 minutes Caballero had an even better chance, Rodolfo Gamarra rolled the ball into his path in the box but he was denied again by Gavilan. Gamarra, however was on hand to turn the ball in and celebrated in the rain in unusual fashion. If that wasn’t enough for one half of football, Nanni should have equalised with a header that was somehow clawed out by Muñoz’s left arm, a tremendous save and a brilliant finish to an excellent game of football.

Libertad XI: Rodrigo Muñoz; Carlos Bonet, Cristian Nasuti, Joe Bizera, Gustavo Mencia; Víctor Ayala, Jonathan Santana, Sergio Aquino, Luciano Civelli; José Ariel Núñez, Pablo Velázquez

Subs: Maurtio Caballero for José Ariel Nuñez, Rodolfo Gamarra for Victor Ayala, Nestor Camacho for Luciano Civelli

Cerro XI: Pablo Gavilán; Mariano Uglessich, Pedro Benítez, Luis Cardozo; César Benítez,  Luis Cáceres; Fidencio Oviedo, Julio Dos Santos, Jonathan Fabbro; Édgar Benítez,  Roberto Nanni

Subs: Mingo Salcedo for César Benítez, Juan Manuel Lucero for Edgar Benítez, Santiago Salcedo for Pedro Benítez

OFF THE BALL

Bad week for Arce family: After Chiqui Arce’s sacking on Monday his brother Juan has now left Rubio Ñu following yet another defeat, this time at home to Cerro de Franco. Rubio Ñu sit second from bottom in what has been a poor season

Cerro Sub20 flying flag: While there is no chance of a Paraguayan side winning the Copa Libertadores this year, the representatives in the U20s tournament, Cerro Porteño, got off to a great start on Saturday beating local side Sporting Cristal 3-1 in Lima. The Cicloncitos trailed at halftime but launched a stirring second half comeback with goals from Oscar Romero, a César Serna penalty and Epifanio Garcia’s late strike. Could Cerro end up winning the Copa Libertadores in their centenary?!

Team of the Week: Carlos Servín (Tacuary); Gustavo Gimenez (Tacuary), Cristian Nasuti (Libertad), Elvis Marecos (Guaraní), Gregor Aguayo (Tacuary); Gustavo Cristaldo (Nacional), Jonathan Santana (Libertad), Jonathan Fabbro (Cerro Porteño), Iván Gonzalez Ferreira (Guaraní); Rogerio Leichtweis (Cerro de Franco), Ariel Bogado (Nacional)

Player of the Week: Iván Gonzalez Ferreira of Guaraní is a left-footer playing on the right wing, he posed a constant threat to Sol de América and gave them the attacking threat from midfield usually attributed to Dario Ocampo (currently injured). His goal was fully deserved and was an excellent strike.

Donkey of the Week: Martin Silva made himself look a bit silly when he rushed over to the referee to breate him for blowing for full time 10 seconds early. Seeing that Olimpia had failed to score in the previous 5,570 seconds I doubt those extra ten would have been the difference.

Goal of the Week: Jonathan Fabbro’s freekick just edges out Iván Gonzalez Ferreira’s effort

Copa Libertadores 2012: Libertad vs Cruz Azul Preview

Libertad vs Cruz Azul
Estadio Nicolas Leóz
08/05/2012, 21.30 (02.30 BST)

Libertad will be slight favourites heading into this one by virtue of Velzáquez’s vital away goal in the first leg which means their opponents will have to come on the attack in tonight’s return game. That should suit Jorge Burruchaga’s side who enjoy soaking up the pressure before picking sides apart with their rapid passing game.

Libertad training on Sunday ahead of game – Photo: Prensa Club Libertad

The Gumarelo are likely to line up with the same side that took to the field in the Estadio Azul last week with the only doubt between Jonathan Santana and Rodolfo Gamarra. The latter offers more attacking threat on the wing which could help Libertad profit from counter attacks. Both players are on good form having scored one each at the weekend against Guaraní while the team are performing postively and haven’t tasted defeat for ten games. Defence will be key here, the recent return of Cristian Nasuti alongside Ismael Benegas is a boost but it is Carlos Bonet and Miguel Samudio at full back who must be aware to the threat of Maranhão who drifted to either flank in the first leg.

Cruz Azul will have had a gruelling journey (at least 15 hours long) but have the small positive that they played and won in this stadium earlier in the year. Other than the aforementioned Maranhão the Mexicans were dangerous up front with Edixon Perea and his strike partner Javier Orozco has thrived against Paraguayan opposition so far in the tournament. La Maquina must avoid giving away too many free kicks something they were guilty of throughout the opening encounter, if not they will be punished.

Libertad XI (probable): R.Muñoz; C.Bonet, C.Nasuti, I.Benegas, M.Samudio; S.Aquino, J.Santana, V.Caceres, L.Civelli; P.Velázquez, J.A.Nuñez

Prediction: Libertad to keep their good run of form going and qualify by the single goal, 1-0

SELECTED ODDS:  Libertad win 1.75, Draw 3.75, Cruz Azul win 5.9; 1-0 scoreline 6.9, Under 2.5 goals 1.76

BEST BET: Libertad cleansheet is evens and although they have leaked goals so far Burruchaga’s side are a different proposition in the knockout stages, they have kept four cleansheets in their last five continental second legs – could be worth a punt

Copa Libertadores 2012: Alianza Lima vs Libertad Preview

Alianza Lima vs Libertad
Estadio Alejandro Villanueva
12/04/2012, 20.50 (01.50 BST)

Libertad are already through to the next round thanks to an eleventh hour win against Nacional last week but they must better Vasco da Gama’s result in Montevideo to ensure they finish top of Group six. In many ways the Copa has provided some refreshment for the squad and coaching staff as their below average league form has seen fans turn on them verbally and even physically.

Jorge Burruchaga has welcomed back Cristian Nasuti in defence having had a long layoff with injury, in midfield Rodolfo Gamarra finds himself on the bench as Jonathan Santana will partner Victor Caceres while Sergio Aquino is pushed wide. Up front there is no starting place for Maurito Caballero subject of a rumoured move to Chelsea this week instead it is a partnership between José Ariel Nuñez and Pablo Velázquez finally finding some form having scored three in his last three.

Maurito Caballero was pivotal against Alianza Lima last time - Photo: D10.com.py

Alianza de Lima have nothing to play for, they are already out of the competition and have had an awful campaign losing four of their five so far, just a solitary win against Nacional at home to cheer. They are also in trouble in their league, not just the five points scratched together from six games but the huge debts that could see them facing suspension by the Peruvian FA. A sorry situation for the Aliancistas but don’t expect Libertad to make them feel better tonight.

Libertad XI (confirmed): R.Muñoz; C.Bonet, C.Nasuti, I.Benegas, M.Samudio; S.Aquino, J.Santana, V.Caceres, L.Civelli; P.Velazquez, J.A.Nuñez

Prediction: 0-2

SELECTED ODDS:  Alianza win 4.0, Draw 3.15, Libertad win 2.12; 0-2 scoreline 11.o, Libertad win to nil 3.3

BEST BET: Libertad to win looks fine considering Lima’s poor form and the gap in quality but if you are worried they don’t travel well then a both teams to score at around evens could be the route to take

Copa Libertadores 2012: Libertad sunk by magic moment from Juninho Pernambucano

Vasco da Gama vs Libertad
Estadio São Januário
(0-0) 2-0 – Juninho Pernambucano 53′, Alecsandro 62′

Libertad suffered their third defeat in four games in all competitions and have lost the overall lead of Group 5 in the Copa Libertadores with last night’s defeat in Rio de Janeiro. The introduction of veteran Juninho Pernambucano was key for Vasco da Gama as the 37-year-old scored a sensational goal to break a resilient Libertad defence and turn the tide of the closely fought game.

Jorge Burruchaga went for a defensive 4-5-1 formation leaving Cristian Menendez up front on his own and replacing the suspended José Ariel Nuñez with another central midfielder, Victor Ayala. The ploy seemed to work in the first 45 minutes as Libertad allowed Vasco the ball before squeezing them in their half to win it back. Libertad were good in possession, they looked to build attacks not just fast counters which brought about the best chance of the half on 27 minutes when a searching pass found Civelli on the left wing. The Argentine raced clear only to drag his shot wide. The Gumarelo were called into defensive action as Vasco had chances towards halftime in an end to end finish, like two boxers trading blows but neither could deliver the knockout punch.

Libertad weren't able to avoid another defeat - Photo: D10.com.py

The game was certainly too tight to call and as we see so many times in games of this nature it needs a stroke of genius or moment of absurd quality to mark the difference, that came on 53 minutes from 2nd half substitute Juninho Pernambucano. Vasco had started the final period ferouciously and Alecsandro had come close first with a near post header in the side netting and then forcing Muñoz into a good save in the lead up to the breathtaking goal. A poor corner from the former Lyon midfielder was returned to him by a Libertad head and seeing Muñoz slightly out of position he went for goal whipping it in and beating the Uruguayan goalkeeper at the near post.

That was the kick start Vasco needed and it seemed to knock the stuffing out of Libertad who have definitely lacked confidence in recent games. They doubled their lead ten minutes later and another substitute Allan was the catalyst. He picked out Alecsandro, who had drifted between the two centrebacks, with an excellent pass and the striker tapped it in. There were little chances for Libertad who used all their subsitutes, they kept gambling forward and at one point Vasco had a 3 vs 2 to kill off the game but combined to mess it up. In the last ten minutes the Pablo Velazquez nearly got a long awaited second goal of 2012, firstly he made a bit of space and decided to try his luck from outside the area producing a good save from Fernando Prass. From the resulting corner he picked up the loose ball and took on the Vasco defence using his strength to bustle through the crowd and get his shot away, the ball brushed the side netting but it took two replays for this blog to understand why a goal wasn’t given. It was that close!

Libertad can take heart from the first half performance but the result leaves them in a slightly more precarious situation than expected in the group, especially if Nacional (URU) win next week’s home game to put themselves just one point behind Libertad ahead of their visit to Asunción. Burruchaga needs to rediscover the winning formula and quickly.

Copa Libertadores Preview: Vasco da Gama vs Libertad

Vasco da Gama vs Libertad
Estadio Club de Regatas Vasco da Gama
21/03/2012, 22.00

Libertad and Vasco drew last week but this is set to be a tougher test for the Paraguayan side in Rio de Janeiro, with the side seemingly off the boil recently. Having been unbeaten in the league in their first five games they have now suffered consecutive defeats to rivals Olimpia and most recently Cerro Porteño. Their position in the group means a draw is more than sufficient which should take some of the pressure of Jorge Burruchaga’s side.

Burruchaga has been forced into one change, José Ariel Nuñez scored only to be sent off last week with Pablo Velazquez the likely replacement, the only other change expected is Joe Bizera (back from injury) to replace Nery Bareiro in central defence. The line-up will be a standard 4-4-2 with Rodolfo Gamarra (who scored on his last trip to Rio) and Luciano Civelli the outlets on the flanks, they will have a key role in supporting their full backs while trying to move quickly on the break. It is likely Libertad will be happy to concede ground and play most of the game without the ball in the opening stages but they are masters of letting teams come onto them and think they are in control only to blow them away in a short destructive spell. To prove the point they scored twice in six minutes against Nacional in Montevideo to win and last year’s last 16 2nd leg against Fluminese the Gumarelo scored two goals in the final four minutes to go through on aggregate.

Libertad training before trip to Rio - Photo: Dpto. Prensa Club Libertad

Vasco da Gama also suffered defeat at the weekend and while they can welcome back Juninho Pernambucano to the side they have lost Diego Souza after last week’s red card. His subsequent behaviour (refusing to leave the pitch and throwing a bottle at a Libertad fan) plus Miguel Samudio’s nasty stamp that went unpunished means this could be a fiery contest for both sides and with Colombian referee Wilmar Roldán taking charge don’t be surprised to see a sending off. Vasco’s fans have already given Libertad a hostile welcome, last night the Paraguayan club’s press department posting photos and videos of fireworks being let off outside the team hotel in the early hours of the morning.

Libertad XI (probable): R.Muñoz; C.Bonet, J.Bizera, I.Benegas, M.Samudio; R.Gamarra, V.Caceres, S.Aquino, L.Civelli; P.Velazquez, C.Menendez

Prediction: 2-1

SELECTED ODDS:  Vasco win 1.78, Draw 3.65, Libertad win 5.5, ; 2-1 scoreline 9.4, Over 2.5 goals 2.04

BEST BET: Libertad aren’t playing well and I can’t see them getting another historic away win like in Montevideo but they won’t get beaten out of sight, Asian Handicap looks a good route to take

Copa Libertadores 2012: Libertad stay unbeaten in Vasco draw

Libertad vs Vasco da Gama
Estadio Nicolas Leoz
(0-1) 1-1 – José Ariel Nuñez 71′; Diego Souza 17′

Libertad failed to win but ultimately remain in the driving seat in Group 6 with a draw against their closest rivals Vasco da Gama of Brazil. In what was a cat and mouse first half, Vasco took advantage of a shaky start from the home side to take the lead but the dismissal of scorer Diego Souza (a rather unpleasant incident) handed the initative back to the Gumarelo who equalised and could have   even won had their goalscorer, José Ariel Nuñez, not suffered the same fate as Souza.

In a fairly open start, Vasco were the first to register a shot on target after five minutes but it was directed straight at Rodrigo Muñoz. Libertad countered with a golden chance for Civelli, Rodolfo Gamarra was regulary coming in off his flank as Nuñez pulled defenders into the right hand channel and won a free kick. Miguel Samudio’s set piece wasn’t dealt with by the Vasco defence and it came out to Luciano Civelli who uncharacteristically blazed over.

Vasco took the lead through a dead ball of their own, without Juninho Pernambucano in the side the responsibility was on defender Fagner (recently included in Mano Menezes’ pre-Olympic squad) who put in a dangerous ball headed in by a stooping Souza. Libertad had paid the price for committing too many fouls inside their own half, there had been a spate of free kicks previously which allowed Fagner to test his range. Libertad were not at their best but in the last 15 minutes of the half they began to press better and were winning possession higher up the field which inevitably led to more chances. Cristian Menendez and Nuñez, who had done very well pulling into the channel, both shot wide. The best chance fell to Gamarra on 36 minutes when Vasco lost the ball trying to break again, and it reached Civelli in the box who squared to an onrushing Gamarra, the Paraguayan wasted another chance to test the goalkeeper, shooting over.

Souza heads in the opener - photo: Reuters

Libertad came out in the second half with the same plan, press and mark hard to really get amongst the Brazilian visitors who wanted a slower tempo having taken the lead. On 53 minutes it all got too much for Souza, he responded to Ismael Benegas close attentions by elbowing the defender in the chest. The red card was fully justified but it caused outrage for Souza who clearly believed this part of the game is allowed, he refused to leave the pitch and soon both sets of players began pushing and shoving with Jorge Burruchaga trying to calm his squad as even substitutes began squaring up to one another. As Souza finally departed he pushed the 4th official indicating he had just wanted to get a bottle from the bench. Replays later show that Souza threw that bottle at Libertad fans – a really sad spectacle and a terrible advert for Brazilian football.

Burruchaga responded by going with three up front, brining on Pablo Velazquez for Gamarra and the Argentine coach got it spot on because on 71 minutes the home side had pulled level with Velazquez getting the assist. Samudio had too much time on the left to weigh up his options, his deep swinging cross was nodded back into the path of Nuñez who controlled and finished well with his second touch for his second goal in the competition.

Nuñez celebrates his equaliser - photo: abc.com.py

The game was now there for the taking and Libertad should have won it, Civelli shot over again after a fierce Topo Caceres shot was diverted into his path, Caceres again was the catalyst when he crossed for Velazquez who couldn’t direct his header. A goal was coming until the 82nd minute when Nuñez tripped a Vasco player to earn himself his second booking – he claimed later it was “unfair” but by the letter of the law the referee was right to book the player who didn’t need to make the challenge. There was more incident to follow, Samudio who had become increasingly hotheaded should have been sent off having kicked out after being fouled but the referee missed the incident. Then both sides nearly won it at the death, first Felipe shot inches wide following a mazy run by Vasco’s teenager Barbio, in stoppage time Victor Ayala let fly from distance forcing a good save from Fernando Prass in goal. A draw in the end was a fair result with neither team doing enough to win it.

Libertad have been excellent in the Copa Libertadores so far and until last Friday’s defeat to Olimpia they were unbeaten at home this year. Admittedly the Guma have struggled for a bit of form in recent games, winning just one in four and drawing two. However they head into tonight’s Group 5 clash with a three point lead and have scored four in both home games so far in this competition.

Juninho Pernambucano a key absentee for Vasco

Jorge Burruchaga makes just one change to what has become his established first team line-up having previously rotated between cup and league. Pablo Velazquez has been the weakest of the four fledgling first team strikers, (age range 17-25) and is replaced by the more mobile José Ariel Nuñez which should give the side more variation. The star performer in Libertad’s Copa games so far has been Rodolfo Gamarra on the right who has the ability to destabilise defences with his sleight of foot and change of pace, the 23-year-old was on target against Alianza Lima and set up a goal in the historic victory in Montevideo. Do keep an eye on the substitutes bench too, Maurito Caballero is an exciting talent and the teenager is hotly tipped for a move to Europe sooner rather than later.

Vasco da Gama are back in the Paraguayan capital after 32 years and have turned up without talisman Juninho Pernambucano who scored in their last two State Championship games. The tricky teenager Barbio will be a threat up front but I see the key battle being in central midfield with Vasco’s Eduardo Costa the man who will have to try and close down Topo Caceres at every opportunity. If the Libertad man can get space to thread passes behind the defence to Gamarra, Nuñez or into the strong Cristian Menendez it could be a hard night’s work for the Vasco rearguard.

Libertad XI (confirmed): R.Muñoz; C.Bonet, N.Bareiro, I.Benegas, M.Samudio; R.Gamarra, V.Caceres, S.Aquino, L.Civelli; J.A.Nuñez, C.Menendez

Prediction: 2-0

SELECTED ODDS: Libertad win 2.44, Draw 3.35, Vasco win 3.3; 2-0 scoreline 14.5, Under 2.5 goals 1.79

BEST BET: Despite the strength of Brazilian football, Libertad are cracking value bearing in mind the importance of home advantage (note all five home sides won last night)

Copa Libertadores: Historic triumph for Libertad in Montevideo

Nacional (URU) vs Libertad
Estadio Olímpico, Montevideo
(1-0) 1-2 - Aguirre ’19; Samudio ’57, Caballero ’63

Libertad turned over a one-goal deficit to earn a wonderful win in the Uruguayan capital last night thanks to quickfire goals from left back Miguel Samudio and super sub Maurito Caballero. It represented Libertad’s maiden win over Nacional in the Copa Libertadores and the first victory by a Paraguayan side in Montevideo since 7 April 1993 when Olimpia won by the same scoreline and coincidentally a Mauro Caballero on the scoresheet – Maurito’s father.

As expected Libertad went into the game rather defensively with three central midfielders blanketing the middle of the pitch to try and stop Nacional playing. It certainly seemed to be working, the first 15 minutes went by at a relatively slow tempo and without either side creating a clear chance. But cracks began to appear down the Gumarelo right hand side, on 18 minutes Nacional came close with a header at the far post before opening the scoring just a minute later. Carlos Bonet misjudged the bounce and was beaten too easily by Viudez who saw his cross only half cut out, the ball fell to Sanchez who gave Aguirre the simplest of chances to open the scoring.

The goal certainly sparked Libertad into life and they started to play with a bit more freedom especially Rodolfo Gamarra and Jonathan Santana. The latter had a left foot volley that went over the bar on 25 minutes but the best chance of the half came on 34 minutes when Gamarra released Bonet in behind the defence. The full back’s cross was deflected and Luciano Civelli met it well with his head only to direct the ball straight at Nacional’s goalkeeper, Burián.

At the start of the second half Nacional came out with more determination and looked to kill off the game which would ultimately let Libertad back into it. Rodrigo Muñoz made a good save on 48 minutes but was beaten just six minutes later when substiute Abero capitalised on a mix up in the visitor’s defence but was denied a goal by the upright. Nacional smelled blood and committed men forward to a 57th minute corner only to be stung by a wonderful Libertad counter attack that resulted in the equaliser.

Topo Caceres (who was awesome all night) sprayed the ball wide to Gamarra, the winger held the ball up just enough to play in full back Samudio who made no mistake when faced with the onrushing keeper, slipping the ball between his legs. The winner came just six minutes later, Caceres again played a give-and-go in central midfield before opening the play to substitute Victor Ayala on the right. The Paraguay international flashed a cross (or was it a shot) across the box and there was Maurito Caballero to instinctively stick out his left leg and  emulate his father nineteen years on with a goal in Montevideo.

Nacional’s late rally wasn’t enough as Libertad, who defended poorly individually at times, dug in and held on for this fantastic win that puts them top of Group 5. The next fixture will be in just under a month at home to Brazilian club Vasco da Gama.

Libertad weather the storm: Copa Libertadores 2012

Despite suffering a scare after just a few minutes, Libertad are through to the group stages of the Copa Libertadores with a comfortable 4-1 victory over Ecuador’s El Nacional in Asunción. A huge storm brought an end to weeks of drought in Paraguay and also saw the goals flood in at the Nicolas Leoz Stadium.

Jorge Burruchaga’s only change to the starting line up from the 1st leg was justitified after just two minutes, lanky striker Pablo Velázquez turning home Civelli’s cross. El Nacional were prepared to attack themselves and somewhat surprisingly found themselves level on the night when Paul Minda smashed home after just 13 minutes. With El Nacional in possession of the crucial away goal, Libertad had to attack and the Guma began to stream forward. Rodolfo Gamarra on the right hand side was at the heart of all Libertad’s advances. Having been booked on 15 minutes for diving in the box (according to the referee not this reporter) he then crossed for Ariel Nuñez who managed to bring down the ball and stab home for a lead on the night. Gamarra turned goalscorer on 35 minutes as he found himself with time and space at the back post to lash the ball past Cabezas in the El Nacional net. At half time Libertad were on course for victory.

Gamarra nearly grabbed his second at the start of the 2nd half twisting and turning only for his shot to be blocked by substitute goalkeeper Bonard. The game began to die down as Libertad gained more and more possession, after 75 minutes Ayala was brought on for Gamarra as a defensive move. Ironically the international midfielder almost scored with a rasping drive but the biggest scare was to come. On 79 minutes substitute Edmundo Zura pounced on a defensive error only to go for power over accuracy and shoot wide. A second yellow card for Madrid saw El Nacional reduced to ten men on 88 minutes. Moments later Teenage sensation Maurito Caballero missed a tap-in, but made amends with a clever dummy in stoppage time to allow Bonet’s slide rule pass to find Civelli unmarked at the far post to erase any lingering doubts.

Libertad’s victory sees them progress to Group 5 along with Vasco de Gama, Nacional (URU) and their opponents next week Alianza Lima.
