Copa Libertadores 2012: Alianza Lima vs Libertad Preview

Alianza Lima vs Libertad
Estadio Alejandro Villanueva

Libertad are already through to the next round thanks to an eleventh hour win against Nacional last week but they must better Vasco da Gama’s result in Montevideo to ensure they finish top of Group six. In many ways the Copa has provided some refreshment for the squad and coaching staff as their below average league form has seen fans turn on them verbally and even physically.

Jorge Burruchaga has welcomed back Cristian Nasuti in defence having had a long layoff with injury, in midfield Rodolfo Gamarra finds himself on the bench as Jonathan Santana will partner Victor Caceres while Sergio Aquino is pushed wide. Up front there is no starting place for Maurito Caballero subject of a rumoured move to Chelsea this week instead it is a partnership between José Ariel Nuñez and Pablo Velázquez finally finding some form having scored three in his last three.

Alianza de Lima have nothing to play for, they are already out of the competition and have had an awful campaign losing four of their five so far, just a solitary win against Nacional at home to cheer. They are also in trouble in their league, not just the five points scratched together from six games but the huge debts that could see them facing suspension by the Peruvian FA. A sorry situation for the Aliancistas but don’t expect Libertad to make them feel better tonight.

Libertad XI (confirmed): R.Muñoz; C.Bonet, C.Nasuti, I.Benegas, M.Samudio; S.Aquino, J.Santana, V.Caceres, L.Civelli; P.Velazquez, J.A.Nuñez

Prediction: 0-2

SELECTED ODDS:  Alianza win 4.0, Draw 3.15, Libertad win 2.12; 0-2 scoreline 11.o, Libertad win to nil 3.3

BEST BET: Libertad to win looks fine considering Lima’s poor form and the gap in quality but if you are worried they don’t travel well then a both teams to score at around evens could be the route to take
