The Copa Libertadores starts in earnest for Olimpia who, having safely progressed through the prelimiary round, now face one of their toughest games of the group, a trip to Rosario, Argentina to face Gerardo Martino’s Newell’s Old Boys. There have been four previous meetings between these two teams in the Copa Libertadores in the 1975 and 1993 editions resulting in two draws and each side winning one game.

Ever Almeida has instilled discipline and organisation into Olimpia, particularly in midfield where they keep much better shape without the ball, so far in three matches in 2013 they are yet to concede a goal. Up front the main goal threat is the physical presence of Juan Carlos Ferreyra but his effectiveness will depend on the performance of playmaker Juan Manuel Salgueiro. Almeida is expected to start with three at the back but we saw against Luque in the previous match that is willing to adapt to four if he deems it necessary.

We saw last year that Newell’s Old Boys under Tata Martino are also a very disciplined side and like all his teams they will press ferociously from the front to try and win the ball, so expect an interesting contrast of styles as Almeida prefers his teams to sit deep and counter with direct moves. Ignacio Scocco was the main man in last year’s excellent Apertura campaign, he is a goal poacher and will be drifting into space all the time so El Decano’s back three must be vigilant. There is one Paraguayan in the team, right back Marcos Cáceres, who will be trying to get crosses into Scocco as often as possible. Also two names familiar to my readers from Europe are ex-Manchester United and Liverpool duo, Gabriel Heinze and Maxi Rodriguez both expected to start.

Newell’s Old Boys XI (possible): Nahuel Guzman; Marcos Caceres, Santiago Vergini, Gabriel Heinze, Milton Casco; Hernan Villalba, Pablo Perez,  Victor Figueroa, Martin Tonso; Ignacio Scocco, Maxi Rodriguez

Olimpia XI (probable): Martín Silva; Salustiano Candia, Herminio Miranda, Enrique Meza; Alejandro Silva, Richard Ortiz, Eduardo Aranda, Wilson Pittoni, Sebastián Ariosa; Juan Manuel Salgueiro; Juan Carlos Ferreyra

Prediction: 1-0

Selected Odds: Newell’s win 1.6, Draw 4.0, Olimpia win 7.4, 1-0 win 6.2, Under 2.5 goals 1.76

Best Bet: Will be hard for Olimpia to get a result here, Under 2.5 goals the best bet with two sides that can defend well
