Cerro Porteño vs Santa Fe
La Olla, Asunción
07/03/2013; 19:15 (22:15 GMT)
TV: Fox Sports 2 (Paraguay); ESPN (UK)
Two-time Copa Libertadores winner Chiqui Arce is back in the pressure cooker atmosphere (in the aptly named ‘Olla’) as he takes charge of Cerro Porteño for the first time. As a player he won this tournament with both Grêmio and Palmeiras and while he couldn’t manage that with El Ciclón in his days as right-back for the club he can try and make amends from the bench.
The last time we saw Arce in ‘continental’ competition was in the World Cup Qualifiers as head coach of the Paraguayan national team where he suffered greatly and was sacked after a defeat to Bolivia in La Paz. We realised then that the gameplan is usually based on a standard 4-4-2 with a heavy emphasis on possession and fluidity between the phases of defence and attack, which means you can end up exposed defensively. Cerro will actually line up as a 4-4-1-1 tonight, Jonathan Fabbro simply has to be the playmaker something that Arce has recognised.
Santa Fe arrive from Colombia on the back of two 1-1 draws in their opening games, both times they have scored in the 15th minute of the game, once it was the opener and the other time it was the equaliser. The man they must watch out for, according to Colombian football journalist Carl Worswick, is Wilder Medina with the veteran striker going through a purple patch having scored six in six league games so far this year.
Cerro Porteño XI (probable): Diego Barreto, Carlos Bonet, Teodoro Paredes, Williams Martinez, Luis Cardozo; Mathias Corujo, Fidencio Oviedo, Julio Dos Santos, Oscar Romero; JonathanFabbro, Santiago Salcedo
Independiente Santa Fe XI (possible): Camilo Vargas; Humberto Mendoza, Carlos Valdes, Juan Daniel Roa, Yulián Anchico, John Valencia, Daniel Torres, Luis Carlos Arias, Omar Pérez, Martínez Borja, Wilder Medina
Selected Odds: Cerro win 1.97, Draw 3.6, Santa Fe win 4.4, 1-1 draw 7.4, Both Teams to Score 1.95
Best Bet: Very unsure, it is a big unknown with Arce at the helm – something like BTTS seems safest using form as a guide
