Copa Libertadores 2013: Libertad shocked by Sporting Cristal but fight back

Libertad vs Sporting Cristal
Estadio Nicolas Leoz, Asunción
(0-1) 2-2 – Benítez, Nuñez; Avila (2)

Another 2-2 draw in Asunción following Olimpia’s match that ended with the same scorline on Tuesday night, Libertad were minutes away from their first ever home defeat to a Peruvian side and preserved their unbeatean streak in the Copa Libertadores which now stands at nine games.

Irven Avila was the thorn in Libertad’s side, scoring either side of halftime to hand Sporting Cristal a surprise 2-0 lead. Pedro Benítez, who may or may not have been offside, managed to pull one back in a goalmouth scramble and Nuñez finally got the equaliser after the ball had been thrown into the box for the umpteenth time in the dying minutes.

Although the result was a shock it shouldn’t harm the Paraguayans hopes of qualifying, they still sit top of the group by three points and are in the driving seat.
