Copa Sudamericana 2013: Guaraní vs Oriente Petrolero preview

Guaraní vs Oriente Petrolero
Dos Bocas, Asunción
01/08/2013; 21:50 (02:50 BST)
Preliminary Round, 1st Leg
TV: Fox Sports (Latin America)

In a repeat of last year’s preliminary round match up Guaraní and Oriente Petrolero go head-to-head in Dos Bocas. Last year they suffered a surprise defeat at home but went through on away goals with a famous victory in Santa Cruz. Under new coach Gustavo Diaz they’ll be hoping to avoid the need for a win in Bolivia by securing the game this evening in Asunción.

Guaraní looked good against Cerro in the league match last Friday and Luis de la Cruz is really developing into the player I hoped he could be, full of pace and ideas he is always a danger when he receives the ball. Federico Santander is back for Guarani and he is the perfect foil for the pacey Benfica man Derlis Gonzalez who will be playing his first ever continental game should he be handed a start tonight. Defensively it is the experience of the Emperador who will bring stability, Julio Cesar Cáceres was part of the Olimpia side that won the 2002 Copa Libertadores so will be able to marshal his younger colleagues.

The Bolivians have an advantage of being based in Santa Cruz next to the wonderful Tahuichi Academy and they have a couple of teenagers in the squad – 18 year old Pedro Azogue should play with Danny Bejarano one year his senior. French-born striker Hugo Bargas has been included in the squad but isn’t expected to start.

Guaraní XI (probable): Pablo Aurrecochea; Eduardo Fillippini, Luis Cabral, Julio Cesar Caceres, Elvis Marecos; Luis de la Cruz, Miguel Paniagua, Jorge Mendoza, Ivan Gonzalez Ferreira; Federico Santander, Rodrigo Teixeira

Oriente Petrolero XI (probable):  Carlos Arias; Miguel Hoyos, Pablo de Muner, Mariano Brau, Marvin Bejarano, Pedro Azogue, Danny Bejarano, Fernando Saucedo, Matias Cordoba, Yasmani Duk, Alcides Peña

Prediction: 2-1

Selected Odds: Guaraní win 1.48, Draw 4.4, Oriente Petrolero win 8.4, 2-1 home win 9.4, Over 2.5 goals 1.86

Best Bet: Guarani have poor record in continental competition of late but it would be a huge surprise if we saw a repeat of last year’s result, I like the idea of Guarani/Guarani (HT/FT) with them surely showing more urgency and adventure early on
