Copa Sudamericana 2013: Guaraní vs Atlético Nacional preview

Guaraní vs Atletico Nacional
Defensores del Chaco, Asunción
20/08/2013; 19:15 (23:15 BST)
2nd Preliminary Round, 1st Leg
TV: Fox Sports 2 (Latin America)

An emphatic win against Oriente Petrolero in the previous round remains Guaranís´s only triumph this season in what has been a difficult start. The sacking of Gustavo Díaz following three draws seems to have been rather hasty in the wake of their recent results. Following that game against Petrolero in Santa Cruz they’ve lost to Sol de América (0-2) and General Díaz (0-3). Tonight they face Atletico Nacional who are in buoyant mood having won their previous four matches and are unbeaten in 13 competitive games.

Guaraní need goals, they will certainly concede in Medellín, so all roads lead to Santander with the striker scoring 3 of Guaraní´s six goals this season. He will probably partner the youngster Derlis Gonzalez up front and the Benfica loanee will want to try and start well as he has a habit of running out of steam late on in games. Defensively it is hard to understand how they managed to concede three in the first 45 minutes against General Díaz but Luis Cabral and Julio César Cáceres simply must be on top form to combat players of the calibre of ex-Chievo striker Fernando Uribe.

Atletico Nacional are flying, and while ex-Aston Villa striker Juan Pablo Angel hasn’t traveled to Asunción it is no great loss when you look at the attacking options they have. Sherman Cardenas can score goals from midfield and actually scored the winner against Paraguay for Colombian U20s back in 2009 – Federico Santander  was on the losing side that day. Another player with plenty of knowledge of Paraguayan football is Francisco Nájera who was a key part of Olimpia’s 2011 Clausura winning squad.

Guaraní XI (probable): Pablo Aurrecochea; Eduardo Fillippini, Luis Cabral, Julio Cesar Caceres, Edgar Aranda; Luis de la Cruz, Miguel Paniagua, Jorge Mendoza, Ivan Gonzalez Ferreira; Federico Santander, Derlis Gonzalez

Atletico Nacional XI (probable):  Franco Armani, Francisco Nájera, Diego Peralta, Oscar Murillo, Alexis Henriquez; Diego Arias, Farid Díaz, Alejandro Bernal, Sherman Cárdenas, Jhon Pajoy, Fernando Uribe

Prediction: 1-2

Selected Odds: Guaraní win 3.25, Draw 3.25, Atletico Nacional win 2.54, 1-2 away win 11.5, Over 2.5 goals 2.42

Best Bet: Pretty rare I predict an away win in international competition but Atletico Nacional are flying while Guaraní look poor. Having said that the value bet in my opinion is Over 2.5 goals.
