The clásico paraguayo is in its centenary year and for the 279th time these two old rivals meet. Cerro and Chiqui Arce hoping it is a case of third time lucky having failed to win either derby during the Apertura. A victory would be huge for the nominal home side, putting them four points clear of the chasing pack comprised of Libertad and Capiatá. Conversely a win for Olimpia would put them just a point behind their archrivals with a game in hand. Without doubt we can expect a full-blooded game tomorrow.
Cerro Porteño will play with four at the back, Carlos Bonet providing plenty of experience at full back with Mareco and Cardozo in the middle. The Romero twins will want to emulate the Salcedo brothers (Mingo and Santiago) who scored in the same clásico in Cerro´s last win in this fixture a 4-1 thrashing in the 2012 Clausura. That was an anomaly, usually this game is decided by the odd goal if indeed there is a winner. Julio Dos Santos has played over 20 clásicos so his influence in midfield will be important. So far this season the aerial route has been favoured by Arce´s side and it has brought plenty of reward with the majority of Cerro’s goals coming from headers this year, Beltrán is the target man up front.
Olimpia will start with the “two Johns” Salgueiro and Ferreyra who scored three goals in two clásicos in 2010. The defence is a hard one to figure out, Herminio Miranda is out with an injury and it looks like Carlos Humberto Paredes will step in to provide stability in what seems to be a very sturdy back five. Pittoni is an important player in the middle, he provides defensive cover but is creative too and the battle between Pittoni and Dos Santos is likely to be a key one today.
Selected Odds: Cerro win 2.48, Draw 3.3, Olimpia 2.82, 1-1 draw
Best Bet: Chiqui Arce’s team nearly always concede against decent sides, Olimpia will be weaker without Miranda so BTTS seems a good call
